Its classically trained dancers are selected in a competitive national audition and come to St. Louis from all over the world. This performance includes a dazzling excerpt from audience favorite The Nutcracker, as well as some exciting contemporary pieces that demonstrate the company’s artistry and versatility.
Artistic and Executive Director Gen Horiuchi, originally from Tokyo, Japan, moved to the United States after winning the Prix de Lausanne, the international ballet competition in Switzerland, and receiving a scholarship to study at the School of American Ballet. The great George Balanchine invited him to join New York City Ballet and roles were created especially for him. Horiuchi’s Broadway and London credits include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance and the role of Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats. He also choreographed the magnificent opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
