What is La Fete du Midsummer?

La Fete du Midsummer is an annual celebration of the Summer Solstice and St. Charles’ French-Canadian heritage. Celebrated on June 24 alongside Quebec and other French communities’ St. Jean Baptiste Day, the event keeps Saint Charles’ pre-colonial history alive by highlighting the lasting influence of French Canadians and Native Americans on the development of the area. “Our hope is that every visitor leaves with a deeper understanding of the French-Canadian roots of St. Charles and the history behind the area known today as Frenchtown,” Marsha Adams, Frenchtown Heritage Museum said.

Things to Do at La Fete du Midsummer in St. Charles

La Fete du Midsummer is one of many things to do in St. Charles this summer. Come hungry – several Frenchtown (and local) restaurants and cafes will be on-site serving some of their best bites and drinks! Food and drink vendors include brunch favorites from La Belle Vie, locally roasted coffee from Course Coffee Roasters, pastries from Bike Stop Bakery, Cajun and Creole-inspired dishes from Shay’s Creole Smokehouse, and barbecue from Big MO’s BBQ. Enjoy a craft beer from Good News Brewing or cocktails made with small-batch spirits from Naked Tiki Distillery, then finish your evening with a sweet treat from Lyons Frozen Custard.

Between bites, browse vendor tables showcasing local businesses and organizations. Discover crystals and jewelry from Stephanie’s on 2nd, unique finds from Black Cat Antiques, and bouquets from Stella’s Stems. Learn about Juiced Wheels’ e-bike rentals and bicycle tours, discover more about the newest addition to Frenchtown, Bench Racers, and stop by the French Sister Cities booth to learn about St. Charles’ relationship with its French sister city, Montbéliard. Don’t forget to participate in the Foundry Art Centre’s free art activities!

Throughout the evening, enjoy live music from the Kingdom Brothers, who provide a soundtrack blend of blues, R&B, and gospel.

“The event is free, celebrating our wonderful community of Frenchtown and a desire to share it with others,” said Adams. “Come enjoy food, drink, music, art, games, and conversation for the evening. La Fete du Midsummer is a simple Summer Solstice celebration of community, all are welcome.”

Beyond the festivities, Adams hopes visitors gain a deeper appreciation for the area’s history. "Because these communities thrived through the contributions of French Canadians and Native Americans, our hope is that attendees leave with a better understanding of the French-Canadian influence in St. Charles and why this area is known today as Frenchtown," Adams said.
